One day after a service, she took a dollar bill out of her purse to give me. Out of polite reflex, I declined but even as a new Christian I knew that the Lord had put it upon her heart, and she was going to get the greater blessing. So I took it.

Mary Jameson

My first preaching assignment was at an assisted living facility for senior citizens. At the time, I was about 33 years old, and the pastor came up to me one day (the janitor) and asked if I would do the little church service once a month. I was very excited to take it, and it was only a couple of blocks away. As I was still without a car, I could just lock up the church after the Sunday morning service, wait and pray, and walk over there at 2 p.m. I would have to go all alone at first.

Well, I remember I studied a lot, practiced a lot, and probably wrote out an outline to follow: opening prayer, songs, praise reports, a song before the message, etc. Boy, was I nervous, and after church the first Sunday, I prayed for a couple of hours before I got there. They were a nice little group of six or so grandmas and an old boy or two, and we met near the main entrance.  They were very kind to me and enjoyed the message. I could hardly wait to do the service the following month.

Pretty soon I realized that the other churches in town were not coming on their Sundays, and I felt confident enough and offered to do it every week. The old timers agreed to let me. Over time, I started bringing a guitar, and a wonderful senior lady, Viola, came and played the piano in the old church style. It was a great experience.

One of the regular attendees was Mary Jameson. I think her family would pick her up for a regular church service and bring her back. She then would come to my service pushing her walker ahead of her. Mary loved the Lord and was always uplifting though she was not in the best of health. One day after a service, she took a dollar bill out of her purse to give me. Out of polite reflex, I declined but even as a new Christian I knew that the Lord had put it upon her heart, and she was going to get the greater blessing. So I took it.

Now it is a couple of decades later, and I still remember Mary Jameson, the first person to give me a dollar in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. And though I have received more from many others, I am writing this about her. I know you will understand.

Sometime later, Mary had some heart problems, and I visited her in the intensive care unit of the hospital. Her family had talked her into getting a pacemaker. She said she did it for them and wished she hadn't agreed to the procedure because she was ready to be with the Lord. And so, in spite of the pacemaker, she didn't stay long and got her way after all.
