Before becoming a Christian, I heard about those tongues people, and there were some living down the street. As peculiar as that was, they had a midweek prayer meeting at home, too, so I figured they must be a nut group for sure.

Those Tongues People

tongues, Mark 16, Baptist, American Baptist,

Before becoming a Christian, I heard about those tongues people and there were some living down the street.  As peculiar as that was, they had a midweek prayer meeting at home too, so I figured they must be a nut group for sure. But soon after the Lord Jesus saved me from my sins, and coming across a Christian TV channel, I heard preachers talking about speaking in tongues. Being objectively interested this time, and checking the scriptures they referred to, I got a sense of what it was all about. It seemed that tongues was a sign, a manifestation of the presence of God, a way of articulating something you didn't have the words to express, and how to pray when you had a need to pray, but didn’t know what to say. One of the places tongues is written about is in Mark 16:15-18.

Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.   And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

Even though they were talking about speaking in tongues on television, I never heard any. However, I was getting convinced by the word of God that it was for real.

Also at that time, I was attending a Baptist church which had a library and went over to investigate the subject. Telling the librarian about my interest, she selected a commentary for me to look at and told me what the American Baptists believed, which was, there were no more such signs following believers since the last apostle died.  Well, it didn't seem like the Bible was telling me that, and, besides, I knew God was still doing miracles. After all, he had done more than one in my life by then, and was actually living inside of me!

Then, one evening, while lying on the couch in the den, I prayed and said, “Lord, if tongues is for real and I need it, I want it.” The next thing I knew, I opened my mouth to see if I had it, and I did! It was amazing because I was speaking in a language that I didn't understand, and excitedly listened in an analytically detached sort of way, and wondered what the words meant.  It wasn’t a repetitious utterance, and I noted how the words were forming and coming out of my mouth effortlessly.  Well, as time went on, I found that I prayed and talked in tongues more and more, and sang in tongues, too: in melodies I knew and those I never had heard before.  Also, the well of words never dried up, because the source of those words is limitless, as the Lord himself is boundless and eternal. By the way, this all happened many years ago, and ever since I have been speaking, praying, and singing in tongues regularly.

One time, however, at a low point in my Christian life, I was suffering from a depression (or maybe I should say “oppression”) and having anxiety attacks too, which were a real bugaboo for a couple of years.  Then one day it dawned on me if I spent as much time in the word of God as I could, and prayed in the spirit as much as I would, there could be a victory over the oppressive gloom.  And thus, with the taking of that prescription, I got a victory over the situation, and you can too. Also, praying in tongues is a great way to intercede in prayer for others, especially at the very time of their need, and when you don’t know how long or what to pray. One more thing: The Lord Jesus didn't say the signs listed in Mark 16, will or might follow believers - he said they shall follow believers. Shall means it is a spiritual law and it must happen, but you may have to do a little dictionary investigation on the difference between will and shall, especially for reading the 1611 Authorized Version, which uses the word shall extensively.  “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (II Timothy2:15)

And so, until we meet again – Remember, God loves you.  Read your Bible.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen
