The Synagogue of Satan

synagogue of Satan, synagogue, church, congregation, Berea, Messiah,

In two of the Revelation church letters the term “synagogue of Satan” is used.  For example, in Revelation 2:9 it says, “I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.”

A synagogue is the building the Jews meet into practice their religion, and it also means the people that meet there, the congregation.  It’s like other religions that use the term church.  To them, the church can mean the building they meet in or the congregation.  Usually, though, it means their church building before they think of the people.  They might say, for example, “I am going to church today,” and that means they are going to the church building or property, whether there is a meeting or not.  When I was a church janitor, I might say I was going to church – to clean the building – but not to a meeting.  Or I’d say I worked at the church, the building.   In God’s church the word church never means a building, but always the people who gather in his name, the congregation. By the way, it only takes two or three to have a meeting. (Matthew 18:20) This is an important fact to remember, as there is no mention of God’s church having a special building to meet in.  And for that reason, Christians don’t need to build one, let alone a cathedral.  In Bible illustrations, all of the Lord’s congregations met in homes, or like the boys walking on the public road to Emmaus (Luke 24), or on resurrection night where the  disciples were assembled ( John 20), or at the ol’ fishing hole mentioned in John Chapter 21.  But back to the synagogue of Satan…

When the Lord Jesus went around Israel preaching the gospel in the synagogues, they rejected and even tried to kill him, the very God they said they served.  How ironic the Jews called and do call themselves “God’s chosen people.”  Chosen for what, I wonder?  The day of evil? The synagogue of Satan?  And interestingly there is no example of any synagogue accepting Jesus  as their Messiah and turning Christian; not even at the synagogue at Berea that studied the scriptures where many were converted.  Those Berean born-againers had to come out of her and be separate, because being a follower of Jesus Christ was, and is, frowned upon down at the ol’ synagogue:  forbidden as a matter of fact.

So let me suggest as there is a synagogue of Satan, there is also a church of Satan, masquerading around as Christians, and they too do not accept Jesus Christ as the head of their church.  It is all just a show, and if he showed up at their building, they’d try to do to him what the Nazarenes tried to do at theirs – murder him – the God they said they served!

Here’s a little tip to tip you off about the church of Satan.  If the building you gather in is referred to as the church, you are probably in the wrong church.

And so, until we meet again... Remember, God loves you.  Read your Bible.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen
