sword, Luke 22:38, Judges, Ehud, Peter, SWORD GRABBING ANTICHRISTS

The kingdom of heaven is at hand.  Are you ready to meet the Lord?

A lot has been said in reference to the Lord Jesus Christ telling his disciples to buy a sword if they didn’t have one.  Let’s refresh our memory in the Gospel of Luke.  You can associate the Luke address with calibers, which may get it into your sight picture - Luke 22:38 –but we’ll  start at verse 35.

And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.  Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.   For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.   And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.

As you remember, the Lord had previously sent out the disciples without a purse, meaning money; and without scrip, meaning a pack containing itinerant preacher necessities; and they were to be shod with sandals, flip flops, instead of shoes.  They were to go extra light because the Lord, somehow and some way, would provide for them, and it was a lesson they needed practical experience in.  And if the Lord sent you on a mission, he would take care of your needs too, even by a peculiar or supernatural way if need be, as in multiplying of bread in the wilderness, money in the mouth of a fish, or a keyless escape from jail.

Then, just before the Lord was about to depart from this world, he left the 22:38 directions in Luke.  And even though they knew things would pan out if the Lord sent them out again with only the clothes on their backs, they were now to let - as in allowing him that wants to take a purse, scrip, or shoes - let him take whatever things make him feel more comfortable.   You know, it’s like some people camping out take only a sleeping bag and a tent they can carry in a pack on their back, versus those who feel more comfortable camping out by hauling a fifth wheel trailer behind their four by four super duty truck.

Well, in addition to a purse, scrip, and shoes, the Lord allowed those who would feel more comfortable, to carry a sword - a side arm.  As a matter of fact, if one was going to feel extremely uncomfortable being unarmed, he would be better off to sell his clothes and go buck naked and buy a weapon, then go out on the road feeling anxious all the time.  This would be especially true if one was sent to a place of dangerous people or animals.  I knew a missionary in Africa during the early days that shot several lions to safeguard his own self and others.  He also had a great a tale about eating zebra steak out on a trek; a zebra shot with a gun, of course.

Please note, a sword is not a long distant weapon like a bow or a javelin; is low profile, and can be hidden easily depending on the size. That reminds me of Ehud in the Book of Judges, known to some as “Lefty.”  He had a cubit long conceal carry dagger, which he assassinated an evil king with.  As a matter of fact, he shoved it so far into the potentate’s belly of lard, his blubber swallowed up the haft, the handle of the dagger.  Well, back to the meat of the lesson...

The Lord authorized the carrying of side arms for defense against beasts and criminals, but not against the authorities should you be found in a Garden of Gethsemane situation.   And as you remember, Peter was reproved for using his sword to defend the Lord when it was the Lord’s time to be arrested.  By the way, evidently two of the disciples had been carrying side arms already with no objections, and they weren’t arrested in the garden for unlawful possession because it wasn’t against Roman law to carry.   Arms were allowed for self-defense, and the Lord Jesus authorized the carrying and use of them for the same: for personal protection, but not for an army raised up in his name.  Now the question can be asked, “Who would not want you to have arms that the Lord Jesus Christ allows?”  The answer is simple.  The sword grabbing antichrists because they want to emasculate, enslave and kill you.  And if they grab your sword, they will want to grab your pocket knives next, just like some places do already.

Be forearmed though: fighting the foe with the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God, is the right way to fight, rather than fighting in holy wars and crusades, “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”

And so, until we meet again…  Remember God loves you.  Read your Bible.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen
