“Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me." (Mark 8:34)

The Right Cross to Bear and Wear

Lots of people wear a cross as jewelry. Some crosses are gold, some are silver, and some are wood or plastic; and a cross in a woman's jewelry box is considered to be a standard item. Of course, Christian women are not to be adorned with such things, but with good works instead. Evidently it was not necessary for men to be told that. (I Timothy 2:9-10)

The Lord Jesus said about the Christian’s cross, “Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me." (Mark 8:34) In other words, as he was going to Calvary to be crucified for being God's righteous Son, you can get in line and be nailed to the cross as well. But that is not a pretty picture, is it, and why many of his disciples left him because they knew exactly what he meant.

The cross the Lord Jesus preached about is the right cross to bear and wear, but not the one that is an ornament. And that reminds me of the hymn entitled, The Old Rugged Cross.  How many ol’ rugged crosses have you seen down at the church building, anyway?  I’ve only seen one which was made of natural tree branches, but it got replaced one day by a smooth and polished one that is now back-lit with a florescent tube or two. So much for the Old Rugged Cross.

Come to think about it, the Bible doesn't say anything about displaying the cross either, but it does say to preach the cross. (I Corinthians 1:18) And interestingly in regards to world history, the cross pictured today have been the image of the sun god long before Jesus was born; and thousands of years later it is still openly displayed by its worshippers.  They also like to display the likeness of Jesus hanging dead on their sun god image.  But that’s another lesson for another time.

And so, until we meet again… Remember God love you.  Read your Bible.
