There is more to an image than a likeness of a person as a statue, or on a coin, or a bill. An image may abstractly represent someone or something, whether in three dimensions or two.

Image Worship

Today, most national coins and bills have something in common: they have an image and a superscription. Interestingly, the Lord Jesus pointed out that money really belongs to the one whose image and superscription is on it - Caesar's. (Mathew 22:15-22)  He used the word Caesar in a generic sense that encompasses any ruler with his image on the money. This is a sad note for those who think the money in their pocket and in their bank account belongs to them. Not so! Knowing who the money really belongs to is still important today, however.

Listen: There is more to an image than a likeness of a person as in a statue, or on a coin, or on a bill. An image may abstractly represent someone or something, whether in three dimensions or two. Take Nebuchadnezzar's image in Daniel Chapter 3: a gold monolith, which was sixty cubits tall, by six cubits wide, and represented him, the king. Because of its width to height ratio, I suspect it was similar to the Egyptian obelisk, which was the image of Pharaoh, the supposed incarnate sun god. An image can also be a flag that represents a nation, or a cross which was the intimidating power of the Roman Empire. So, when one worshipped the image of Nebuchadnezzar, for example, one worshipped Nebuchadnezzar. And when one did not worship the image of Nebuchadnezzar, one did not worship Nebuchadnezzar. Simple concept, isn't it?

And so it was that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego found their faith challenged. They were called upon to acknowledge the image, or be thrown into the fiery furnace for not worshipping it when the anthem was played. (Daniel Chapter 3) However, the Lord ultimately delivered them from the king's wrath for their spiritual discernment. How's your discernment these days when it comes to image worship?

God loves you.  Read your Bible.
