(Rev 1:10-11)

Revelation 1, Ephesus,Smyrna, Pergamos, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, Laodicea, East meets West, “I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.”

John was “in the Spirit on the Lord’s day” which means he was spiritually minded, meditating and receiving from God. That’s hard to do when you are absorbed in the things of the world, getting looped at the pub, cruising the internet for porn, or watching the ol’ idiot box. You know why they call the television the idiot box, don’t you? Don’t?  Hmmm, that probably explains a lot right there.

Now, believe it or not, there are modern scribes who use John’s term here, “the Lord’s day” to explain how the sabbath was changed from the seventh day of the week to the first day of the week. And how they got that out of this one hundred percent Jewish apostle is hard to imagine. Keep in mind, though, that scripture says “the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God.”  In other words, the sabbath may not be the seventh day to you, but the seventh day is the sabbath of the God of the Bible.  I didn’t say it…  He said it.

Now about the seven churches mentioned, we have already learned seven has to do with the things of God, and these churches represent God’s church - yesterday, today, and tomorrow.  It is fascinating they are all located in “Asia” or what we call today Turkey and sometimes Asia Minor.  This unique geographical area is the crossroads of human history, and where east meets west. Travel from Asia Minor to the east, and you can get within 60 miles of the North American continent at the Bering Strait. The strait, when frozen, can be crossed by foot in the winter (albeit with difficulty), making it possible to travel from Asia to the North American continent, and then on to the western shores of the Atlantic.  You can also travel from Asia Minor to the west, and get to the eastern Atlantic in Europe. (A globe helps to picture this interesting fact: that it is possible to literally walk from one end of the earth to the other.)  It is in Asia Minor that the Eastern and Western cultures meet and have intermingled and traded for thousands of years, and from where the gospel message has been exported into all the world.

John was told to write a book to the seven churches, God’s church, not only for their benefit but for ours some 2,000 years later. And his book, Revelation, not only tells us what is going to happen in the future, and what has happened in the past but what is happening right now.  Let him that hath an ear to hear, hear.

So until we meet again, remember, God loves you.  Read your Bible

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen
