Yes, the whole time the Lord Jesus had been with them teaching, preaching, healing, and showing them the way, he was their heavenly Father -- our heavenly Father - at the same time. I like that

AO = Word = Lord Jesus Christ = Almighty

“I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.” (Revelation 1:8)

In a way, this verse seems out of place as John is addressing us, and all of a sudden the Lord interjects. Well, if you think about being a Christian, there is not only you living inside your temporary tabernacle called a body, but the Lord is living there too, and using you to do his bidding – hopefully. So, as John was inspired to write the first word of this book to the last, the Lord inserts this comment early to let the reader know that he, God, is the one behind the prophetic treatise.

As the Lord Speaks he could have identified himself by any of the names we are familiar with, as the Good Shepherd, or the Light of the World, the Bread of Life; but in this case, he uses Alpha and Omega, which is the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet.   In English, we could say he is the A to Z of it all, and everything in between.  After all, he is the Word that created heaven and earth and all that therein is; and it is timely to remember the beginning of John’s gospel:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.” (John 1:1-3)

It doesn’t take much figuring to realize the Word, Jesus Christ, was in existence before anything was made that was made, and he made everything in the beginning when time began, and he made time too. (Colossians 1:16-17)  Therefore, he is the only one which is (present tense), and which was (past tense), but he is also the one which is to come (future tense).

I remember the first time I got the understanding that Jesus Christ is not only the Son of God, but he is, in fact, God himself.  It happened while I was reading John Chapter 14:7-9 as he taught the eleven disciples...

“If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. Philip saith unto him, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Show us the Father?”

Yes, the whole time the Lord Jesus had been with them teaching, preaching, healing, and showing them the way, he was their heavenly Father – our heavenly Father - at the same time.  I like that.  Therefore like an algebraic equation, the Alpha and Omega equals the Word; the Word equals the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Lord Jesus Christ equals the Almighty.  Hallelujah!

And so, until we meet again… Remember God loves you.  Read your Bible.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen
