A Recipe for Insanity

If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.   And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. A Recipe for Insanity, father, mother, wife, children, brethren, sisters, disciple, Matthew 10, hate, Jesus Christ, Jesus, Sunday, school, Holy Ghost, teacher, Kingdom of God, 501(c)3, Father, Matthew 6, variance, born again, Jews, Jewish, temple,

You probably have run into this scripture from time to time and heard it explained away by your Pastor or Sunday school teacher in regards to hating your close relatives.  After all, that doesn’t sound like something the loving Saviour would say.  So excuses are made to adulterate the meaning that we don’t offend anyone like the Lord Jesus offended most everyone when he said it.

Though there are many water-downers when it comes to this passage, most every translation uses the word hate rather than the desired substitute, like love less.  I guess for scholars, even for the devil’s scribes, there is no way to substitute a temperate word for hate without appearing unscholarly.  Maybe that tells us something about the Lord Jesus Christ - the creator of languages - he meant what he said and said what he meant.  And perhaps we’ll have to have the supernatural Holy Ghost teacher fill us in on the meaning, instead of Reverend Doctor Schicklgruber or the Sunday schoolmarm.

Listen: If it’s not obvious to you, when you were born again into the kingdom of God, the King of the kingdom became your Father and he took you out of your natural conceived-in-sin family; placed you into his family via an adoption process, and gave you membership in his church, the body of Christ.  And if you were going to one of those denominational 501(c)3 non-prophet state churches, he took you out of there too; or maybe you haven’t heard to “Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.”

And talking about your heavenly Father and other names that mean Father, such as Abba, Dad, Daddy, Papa (Pope), and Pop, these are reserved just for the Lord because “hollowed be thy name.”  Thus, the Lord Jesus would instruct, “And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.”   Needless to say, calling someone “Grandpa” is blasphemous as well as there is only one Father of the children of God, and no forefathers (grandfathers) for sure.    However grandmother, evidently, is okay as noted by the apostle Paul in his second letter to Timothy.   And since we are adopted into God’s family, it was necessary he give us a variance in our “birth certificate” and a new family tree.

Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.  For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.  And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.

A variance is an exception to an ordinance, statute or law made by a higher authority.  Like the contractor who put up a building six inches too close to the property line in violation of the city ordinance.  He then asked for forgiveness of his mistake and pleaded for the city council to give him a variance so he didn’t have to move his building to where it was supposed to be in the first place.  And by the power of the city council and the signature of the mayor, he was given a variance, and I suppose his competitors, who claimed they had never broken the law, got a little ticked about it.

Your born again birth certificate would be like God going down to the county courthouse and penning some variances on your natural birth certificate because he has the power to do so.  Let’s see.  First of all, he’d have to cross out your date of birth and put in the born again date.  (And come to think about it, what birthdate do you celebrate, anyway?  The day you were born a sinner or the day you were born againer?)  And then he’d write his own name in for Father, the church for your mother, and, if course, he’d strike out your 7lbs. 8 oz. birth weight for the 230 lbs. you were when you dropped out of the spiritual womb.

Also, when your certificate was changed, your newly adopted family accepted the variances, but those from your natural family probably didn’t, unless they understood the born again concept by personnel experience.  Some, if not most of your relatives, want to keep those natural family relationships going as they are the only ones they know about.  How about you?  If your children become born again of the Spirit of God, do you want them to think “God” when they hear or think the word “Father” or do you want them to think you?   After all, you are just the steward of the child until they enter into the faith and the Lord becomes their forever Father, not unlike Jesus showed us at the temple when 12 years old.  Some dads don’t want to give up their position on the royal family throne, however, because it will put their children on even footing with them as a brother.

Along with your new birth certificate, you also received the new family tree which is the same as the Lord Jesus’,  complete with famous thieves, murderers, prophets, prostitutes, paupers, poets, pawns and kings.  It’s the most published family tree in the world.  Interestingly the lineage of the Lord Jesus Christ is the only surviving pedigree for any Jew for 2,000 years; all others being destroyed in Jerusalem, 70 A.D.  Ha! The unconverted "Jew" of today has no way he can document he is Jewish; but all the Christians, on the other hand, have this documentation through adoption into the family of Jesus Christ.

Now you might think that hating your flesh relatives is not a very loving thing to do, but it really is.  If you now belong to Christ, you are spiritually equipped to act like it and treat and interplay with your former relatives like Jesus did with the love of God.  You know, the love of God loves everyone alike, family or not, friend or foe, and is the kind of love the Lord Jesus was filled with when he died for our sins.  Therefore, the Lord would also inform us to take up our cross and follow him to Calvary, hating even our own flesh in order to express the love of God to everyone.

He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.  And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.  He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

Of course, the problem of flesh relatives, “and a man's foes shall be they of his own household,” is not only a fact, but a fulfilling prophecy of the Lord Jesus, and accomplished for your sake, your relatives’ sakes, and for love’s sake, in his grand plan of salvation.  Has the prophecy come true in your life yet?

So, God being your Father, don’t bother calling anyone else his name or you might be holding two opposing thoughts in your mind at the same time, which is a recipe for insanity.  Either God is your Father or someone else is, but not both.  The choice is yours.

And the multitude sat about him, and they said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren without seek for thee.  And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren?  And he looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!  For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen
