9/11: Babylon is Fallen, is Fallen

9/11, 911, September 11, 2001, WTC, world Trade Center, WTC 7, Pentagon, 747, Al-Qaeda, Manhattan, Island, United Nations, babel, Genesis 11, Revelation 14, New York, Macy’s, Revelation, 21, 6, 6:12, Babylon is fallen, 10048, 18:10, Patmos Planet,, patmosplanet

My new job started about six in the morning, September 11, 2001, and the truck was low on gas, but I figured to fill up that night. As I worked, the television program was interrupted to report an airliner had crashed into a World Trade Center Tower. I tried to listen and get a peek as often as possible, and in short order, another plane plowed into the other tower. Of course, then we understood it was no accident, and were horrified to see office workers jumping out of burning buildings. Then spectacularly both skyscrapers collapsed like the best-planned demolition you ever saw, and it was more attention riveting than any Hollywood film could ever hope to be. What else was going to happen? Was a nuclear war about to begin? We also heard the Pentagon was hit by an acrobatic Boeing 757, and later in the afternoon, the 47 story World Trade Center Building #7 fell like a plate of hotcakes into a black hole, though it wasn't struck by an airplane.

As the day went on and we heard gas prices had gone up fivefold, I thought about the few bucks in my pocket, and when I would get home, there was no television, because I had cut the plug off to discourage its use. But a few days later it was going again, and I learned the attack was all brought on by the never before heard of Osama Ben Laden and his radical Al-Qaeda Muslims, living in a cave a zillion miles away in Afghanistan. Wow!Unbelievable! And at the same time, Scriptures kept coming to my mind: “Babylon is fallen, is fallen... For in one hour so great riches is come to nought.” (Revelation 14:8 & 18:17)

Eight years before the 9/11 event, I moved to New Jersey for a time, and like others, I had gone to the 107th World Trade Center observation floor. From the glass-enclosed perch was an extensive view of the New York City area, and I vividly recall looking down, down, down on Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, and out into endless miles of Atlantic Ocean. It was after the basement bomb attack in 1991, and concrete barriers had been installed to prevent vehicles from driving too close to the buildings topside.

From three miles away at my apartment building, I could see the Towers, and from much farther locations they jutted above Manhattan's skyline, and I used them to get my bearings sometimes. Occasionally I would walk over to Exchange Place and look and think about the Towers with an unobstructed view across the Hudson River. They were colossal steel and glass obelisks, phalluses, erected to the god of mammon, and jutting into heaven like intruders into God's realm; and the very thing that made them famous was the very thing that made them vulnerable - they pridefully stood loftily alone and unprotected in thin air.

All the skyscrapers in Manhattan to me were Towers of Babel. The ancient civilization Babylonia, and its premier city, Babylon, derived their names from Babel, which was the first capital of the world. Its citizens were given to an evil imagination and United Nations mentality and began building the first manmade mountain, a skyscraper, in the plains of Shinar. (Genesis Chapter 11) The Tower was to afford the world's elite an eagle's nest view of their domain and subjects below, ready at a whim to soar down and prey upon the unsuspecting. However, God confused their language and disunited them to spare early humanity his wrath. How easy it would be, I thought, for a terrorist to back a van to the waters edge at Liberty Park, fling open the back doors, and launch a missile across the river at those modern Babylonian towers. They were targets that nobody could miss, and even a slightly coaxed blind man could plink one with a .22 rifle. I also wondered if a plane or helicopter would drop a bomb on one as aircraft freely flew around.

As a side note, I did some gospel work in New York. Once I stood in front of Macy's Department Store with a large sports bag full of cassette tapes and tried to hand them out. There was a five-minute message about the end times on them, but not many takers. As frustration grew, I began to bellow boisterously, “Free gospel tapes!” Soon a couple of cops slipped over, and one officer, with a small skinny cigar crimped between his front teeth, asked me what I was doing. I said I was giving away free gospel tapes, and he said that was good, and they left. Another time, I sent a couple hundred businesses in Manhattan a message about the prophecy in Revelation 18. No responses and I questioned why I was doing any of this.     Several years later, however, I would understand I had been sowing timely seeds of faith for New Yorkers horrific days to come.

Well, even though it could be easy for someone to attack the Towers, I knew they were coming down one day, someway, anyway, because I read about it in the Bible. Scripture makes it clear that everything that has been made is temporary, and it all will pass away. The apostle wrote in II Peter 3:10...

“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.”

Yes, that includes our houses, our cars, and all those precious little things we have been accumulating along the road of life. I guess God does not think much of them and is going to do some awesome housecleaning by and by, and will make a new heaven and a new earth. (Revelation 21:1)

Interestingly, some of the events that precede God's new heaven and earth are written about as if they are already a done deal: “...and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: For the great day of his wrath is come and who shall be able to stand?” (Revelation 6:12-17)

You can understand, perhaps, if every mountain and island is going to be moved out of their places, those little ol' skyscrapers won't stand a chance.  And besides, how long will it be before those buildings get too old and are replaced by a newer model, or come down from unexpected causes? Are we so naïve to think that this world, its governments, and its riches, are going to go on and on forever and never end? History teaches all civilizations come to an end, and this one will, and another will take its place - if there is another to follow.

As days passed immediately after 9/11, I grew more curious about the timing of the collapse of the Twin Towers because of the prophecy “Babylon is fallen, is fallen... in one hour.” (Notice it falls twice.) It seemed to me that the two towers fell within a brief time, and maybe within an hour of each other, but I couldn't find out right away.

One day at K-Mart, there were special magazine editions on the September 11th attacks. Excitedly I thumbed through the pages looking for a timeline of events, stopping to study photos of people hanging out of windows to distant themselves from the smoke and flames. There were also surreal images of jumpers gracefully suspended in air as they resigned to falling to their deaths below, rather than perishing in the pyre above. It was just another day for most of them, and all of a sudden, they were cast into a chaotic drama and sudden destruction.   Then, in the magazine, I found what I was looking for.

The timeline indicated the Twin Towers had fallen within an hour of each other! The South tower collapsed at 9:59 am, and the other at 10:28 am, give or take a few minutes. How could the Revelation prophecy and this event not be the actual incident or a type of fulfillment of the prophecy? Listen to a few prophetic passages taken from Revelation Chapter 18, and picture the Twin Towers as vertical cities rather than the horizontal ones we are accustomed to. It is reported that 50,000 people worked in the Towers, with 200,000 passing through as visitors in the complex during a typical work day; and like any city, it had its own Zip Code, which was 10048. (Add them up.) Truly it was a city built in the air.  And within that elevated World Trade Center Metropolis, all the regular daily activities occurred that occur in any city: they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they married and were given in marriage, and they planned and built their future hopes there too.

It is written: “Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come. And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her for no man buyeth their merchandise any more….” (Revelation 18:10-11)

“The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing, And saying, Alas, alas, that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls! For in one hour so great riches is come to nought.” (Verses 15-17) “Alas, alas, that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate. Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets for God hath avenged you on her. And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.” (Verses 19-21)

“And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.” (Verse 24)

You ought to read the whole chapter on your own, though.  It is spiritually eye opening!

Now imagine you are standing at Ground Zero where the Twin Towers were, and looking up you can see only blue sky where the Twin Cities stood. They are totally gone now and have left only a few artifacts buried in the earth beneath, like so many cities which have met the same fate one day or another, some way or another. Keep this in mind, also, that the destruction of the World Trade Center happened in September 2001, and the destruction of the world trade was manifested and realized seven years later in September 2008. Interesting, don't you think?

So, in closing, may I ask, are you ready to meet the Lord Jesus Christ face to face when your life in this world comes to an end - and it will - one day or another, and some way or another. If you are not ready, read your Bible starting in the gospel according to Matthew, and go through to the last book, and take heed to history written in advance. In there is the truth you are looking for, or, the truth you are trying to avoid. It is your choice where you spend the rest of eternity after Babylon is fallen, is fallen.

“Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.”

God loves you.  Read your Bible.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen
